- Abstract
- Data generated from “Planta da cidade do Rio de Janeiro: organisada na carta cadastral”, a historical map at the Benson Latin American Collection (call number G5404 R6 1928 D5). The digitized map images are available from the Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection as a single image. The dataset was generated through Map Warper (Tim Waters) georectifier and image georeferencing software and Esri ArcGis Online. The data represents the historical location of 144 locations in the city of Rio de Janeiro of government buildings, churches, mountains, roads, and plazas. The map was created in 1928 as a Rio de Janeiro city plan cadastral map and it was georeferenced with a contemporary OpenStreetMap version (2020). The locations are named when available in the historical and contemporary map, and the discrepancies in the naming were also identified, including when the spelling was modernized in the contemporary map. If the buildings did not have a name or if the name was illegible they were marked as “null”. The historical and contemporary use of the locations were added based on the names of the buildings using the following categories: avenue, cemetery, church, convent, dam, dock, education building, factory, fort, fortress, government building, health building, hill, island, market, military building, monastery, mountain, national library, null, palace, park, penitentiary, plaza, police building, road, rock formation, school of fine arts, sports club, and train station.

- Statement
- The “Planta da cidade do Rio de Janeiro: organisada na carta cadastral” was created in 1928 by the Division of Works and Roads, Geographical Service of the Brazilian Army, Federal District. The map was published in Rio de Janeiro under the mayorship of Antonio Prado Junior. The physical holding of the map is located in LLILAS Benson and the digitized version used for the creation of this dataset is hosted by the Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection. Winnie Perez Martinez and Joshua Ortiz Baco created the dataset from this digitized image by georeferencing 144 landmark points in the historical map using Map Warper (http://mapwarper.net/). The resulting CSV file was further edited to include the names of the locations in the historical and contemporary maps, name difference, item type in historical and contemporary, and variations from historical to current use. This data comes from the Benson Latin American Collection and is part of the Rare Maps Collection.
